This past weekend was my dad’s birthday. He’s really into coffee and he uses this standard coffee pot, but I was recently in this Brooklyn electronic shop called 1 Stop Camera, doing some shopping for myself – I needed a new lens for my camera – when I stumbled upon an elite gourmet single- cup home- brewing system.

With this thing, you insert a coffee canister, make sure there’s water, set your cup underneath it and the machine brews it. Now my dad likes his coffee strong, and I discovered that there’s even a setting for that – you just program the size of the cup, and the machine brews it accordingly!

So I had them wrap it up and I brought it home with me. Later, when we gave presents to Dad, he saw mine and I couldn’t help but notice a flush of excitement pass over his face, just from the size of the thing. But when he unwrapped it, he was disappointed. “I already have a coffee maker, he said.” “But Dad,” I replied, “this thing is no ordinary coffee maker.” He often tells me that I could sell a slaughterhouse to a cow, but persisting, I told him to try it. And whaddaya know, the old man brewed himself a cup on the small setting, and hey! Mikey likes it. So now I’ve got his blessing on whatever I buy him, especially when it’s from my favorite discount camera store, because this coffee maker’s a keeper.

I just bought a new camera at this discount camera store called 1 Stop Camera and I realized “Hey, I need a tripod too!” What about those shots that need to be set up, like landscapes or family portraits? I can’t do it all myself!

So I went back to this Brooklyn electronic shop and got this sweet Vidpro TT-2000 Remote Control Full Size Tripod with 3-Way Fluid Effect Head. Now I can set my camera and take any kind of shots I want.

And so yesterday, one of my good girl friends called me up, because she knows how much I love photography, and she asked me if I could take some head shots for her (she’s really pretty and wants to be a model, finally, after years of everyone telling her). But since the average refrigerator is 35 degrees, you’re really missing out if you don’t drink a nice bottle at the right temperature.

Yesterday, a young man came in the store, looking for a camcorder. He said he wanted to get the best camcorder, never mind the price. He didn’t even know what they were.So I showed him the Sony HDR-XR520V which is a lovely 240GB HD Handycam - a real cutie that shoots full HD videos on its huge hard disk drive. I just love my Canon EOS Rebel XSI. It’s as simple as that. You see, I’m not a professional photographer or anything; I was just looking for something better than my old point-and-shoot.

I mainly take pics of my kids and family, nothing too complicated. But I always loved my old SLR and although I don’t miss film, I did miss the feeling of a solid camera, and a few basic features like the blurry background effect, which you can't really get in a pocket camera. I knew I wanted something better, but I didn’t really know what.

I came across 1 Stop Camera in Brooklyn and said to myself, what the heck, I’ll give it a try. So I stepped in the store and a helpful young man asked me about the pictures I take and my budget, which was, by the way, something around 700 dollars. You know, I always wanted to upgrade my point and shoot camera to something more professional. I’ve been dreaming about a DSLR for a long time, but the price… I didn’t want to pay a 1000 dollars for a camera. 4th of July Grillin’ Stories – Charcoal Vs. Gas

When my family barbecues on July 4th there is always a fight. You see, we have two schools of barbecue in the family. My father is the charcoal man and my uncle, his brother, is the gas grillin’ man. My father always says that since the dawn of man, meat was made on a fire, real fire! When man discovered fire, he used two sticks, or two stones or whatever and did not go to the local propane distributor. When our forefathers cooked a nice piece of stake after they declared independence, they used charcoal. And he says it also tastes better…
